Datin Prof. Ir. Dr. Lariyah binti Mohd Sidek is a Professor of Civil Engineering at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). Her current position is Head of Dam Safety and Sustainability Intelligence at UNITEN. She is also the Technical Director for ZHL Engineers Sdn Bhd. She has been actively involved in research related to stormwater and urban drainage. She is one of the inventors of an innovative sustainable urban drainage system called Bio-Ecological Drainage Systems (BIOECODS) and the Principal Investigator for GPT's Expert System called DeGPT. She has received several national awards related to research in stormwater and urban drainage, including the Gold Medal Award for BRUSSEL INNOVA '09, the Gold Medal Award for MTE '09, the PECIPTA Award, Gold & Silver Medal Award for I-TEX, the Perak Foundation Excellence in Engineering Research Award, the CIDB Construction Innovation & Invention Meritorious Award, and was recognized as a ASM Top Research Scientist Malaysia in 2023.
As an engineer, she has been involved in numerous consultancy works (more than 40 civil engineering projects) in the area of Stormwater Facilities Detail Design based on MSMA, Stormwater & Drainage MasterPlan, Flood Mitigation Project and Drainage Improvement, Environmental Management Plan, Dam Safety, Dam Break Analysis and Modeling, Hydrology Study for Dam and Mini Hydro power projects. She has been a Professional Engineer since 2003 (P. Eng. No.: 11742) and a corporate member of IEM (M25289) and a panel expert of detailed environmental impact assessment (DEIA) with DOE. She is also very active as an Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) Panel member for the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
As an academician, she has published more than 180 papers in local and international journals, conference proceedings, and technical publications. She is also active in professional organizations and has been appointed as an Exco member for the Malaysian Hydrological Society (MHS) and Chairman of the Engineering Education Technical Division of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). She is also a Member of the International Water Association (IWA), Specialist Group in Urban Drainage – IWA, IAHS, APHWA, and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS). Her research interests are focused on sustainable urban water management, sustainable urban drainage, MSMA Facilities Design, Stormwater Gross Pollutant Traps, urban hydrological modeling, stormwater quality management, Reservoir sedimentation, Hydropower & dam break analysis, and constructed wetlands.
